Walkie Talkie

That's my Walkie Talkie. Motorola brand (with long antenna) can cover a distance up to 10km line of sight. Shiro brand can cover up to 5km; only have one set; the other spoil.

Both Walkie Talkie uses Elliptical polarization antenna. Radio wave can be transmitted by surface wave, skywave and line of sight. As for skywave, the frequency must be lower than 30Mhz, it works when the transmitter sends a radio wave to the ionosphere and reflected back on earth, this is how AM radio works.

I bought an FM Walkie Talkie which means the amplitude of the wave is always constant which is an advantage over AM radio. My Walkie Talkie is 446Mhz to 446.1Mhz so signal cannot be transmitted using skywave; the only solution is line of sight. If there is a building that block the line of sight, the signal is significantly reduced, this is why most Walkie Talkie uses Elliptical polarization antenna since they have both horizontal and vertical polarization and in fact in all direction.

Walkie Talkie works best use in open space. The most important thing is to avoid hills and building or any metal bridges as these tend to block radio wave.
