Khoo Teck Puat Hospital

It has been more than a decade since a new public hospital has opened in Singapore, so all eyes will be on the man heading the Khoo Teck Puat hospital in Yishun when its doors open this year. The specialist clinics open at the end of March, while the wards and emergency department will open later in the year.

Mr Liak Teng Lit, 56, chief executive officer of Alexandra Hospital (AH), has been intimately involved in the concept, creation and staffing of the new hospitals and what they want to see in future ones. The 550 bed hospital will be energy efficient and is expected to use only 40% of the power of similar sized hospitals.

The man with more than 2 decades of experience running hospitals once describe his vision thus: "Even as you walk into the hospital, the clerk at the counter would have been alerted - by a camera or a chip, or any other technology we find suitable - and would know who you are and what you were treated for the first time." This if achieved, could well be a template for other hospitals.
